I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine, Ani lDodi Ve Dodi Li
Song of Songs 6:3a
This Scripture is very commonly written on wedding bands, but also represents our betrothal to God.
The Jewish sages believe that the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai was Gods wedding proposal to Israel and to all assembled at the base of the mountain. Is this an odd idea? No, because marriage is a covenant.
When Jewish people marry, a Ketubah is signed and displayed prominently in their home. A Ketubah is a written wedding contract stating the expectations of each party in the marriage.
God gave His wedding contract to Israel when he spoke to them at Mt. Sinai. Did they accept? Yes! Exodus 19:8 And the people answered together, and said, all that the LORD has spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people to the LORD. KJV
Clearly, God's chosen people, Israel, are betrothed to their God. Gentiles that are grafted-in to the nation of Israel are also betrothed to God. This is not inconsistent with the idea of the bride of Messiah. He is the Bridegroom, the Husband. Is there a more intimate relationship than that between a husband and a wife? This is the intimacy that our God wants with us. This should fill you with awe at His great love. Is He your Beloved? Are you His?
