Description
On the way to our former home in Lake Arrowhead, California, we used to drive through this pass every time we went up or down the hill. Highway 18 is a very scenic drive. This section was cut through the natural slope of the mountain and was closed often because of car-sized boulders falling onto the highway.
The foothills of the mountains are naturally wild. The drive can be very pleasant or very dangerous depending on the weather, but never the same. In summer, when these otherwise unnoticeable plants were in bloom, they looked like giant, majestic candelabras scattered throughout the countryside gracing the hillsides with their gloriously tall stalks.
As I was searching for the perfect one to photograph for a painting, I noticed that the most symmetrical one was on the most steep and dangerous place, one of the passes that was cut through the mountain, on Highway 18.
Another thing that I learned about these wild rugged beauties is that they have a symbiotic relationship with the yucca moth which deposits and egg in each yucca flower it pollinates, which in turn feeds on some of the developing seeds.
Nature fascinates me. These symbiotic relationships make me smile knowing that Gods eye is even of the seemingly small and insignificant of details, like yuccas and moths. If He cares so much for them, how much more for us?
