Description
It thrills me is that we have a Torah scroll in our Messianic synagogue: Gods Word written on parchment in His holy language. What a gift to see an actual handwritten scroll and see it treated with such reverence. We stand anytime the scroll is out of the ark as if we are in the presence of a dignitary. As the Torah scroll is processed around the synagogue (followed by the children), we touch it and then kiss the thing we touched it with, whether or hand, prayer book, bible or tallit. We are affirming our love for Gods Word and we are reminded that His Word is sweet to our lips.
On Simchat Torah (The Joy of the Torah), the eighth day of the Feast of Tabernacles/Sukkot, we dance with the Torah! It is something I look forward to all year. What other people has God imparted His Word to and through? What other people are so blessed to have all of His requirements, instructions and how to follow Him? We are so blessed to have a God that loves us so very much. Everything is recorded for our good. His Word is powerful, more powerful that a two-edged sword. Blessed are those who take hold of Him!
Before the Torah Scroll is placed back into the ark we chant the Eitz Chayim. The words are drawn from Proverbs 3:18 and 17, and Lamentations 5:21. To hear this, go on youtube and enter the search terms, or better yet visit a synagogue!
It is a tree of life to those who take hold of it, and those who support it are praiseworthy. Its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace. Bring us back to You LORD and we shall come, renew our days as of old.
Transliterated: Aytz cha-yeem he la-ma-cha-zee-keem ba, vtome-cheh-ha moo-shahr. Ha-she-vay-noo Adonai, ay-leh-cha vna-shoo-va, cha-daysh, cha-daysh ya-may-noo, cha-daysh ya-may-noo kkeh-dem.
The Eitz Chayim is respectfully painted in Hebrew calligraphy with the Holy Memorial Name represented by two "yads".
